Single Wheels

SingleWheel2Due to the tightening of Australian Design Rules relating to vehicle compliance and the fitment of Single Rear Wheels (SRW), we have now undertaken upon ourselves to acquire all the engineering and brake performance data for Fuso FG's and Isuzu NPS's to meet all the current ADR's for Federal Transport. Our biggest hurdle was finding wheels that had been suitably tested for the job. We had to source these overseas but as a result, all our wheels have now been ISO tested and rated to 6000kg each and allow us to produce the only legal SRW conversion kit in the country for these 6 ton GVM trucks.

Our initial problem was that no aftermarket truck wheel manufacturer in Australia was prepared to supply us with legal wheels (tested and certified). The best any of the manufacturers could give us was a piece of paper stating that for the Mitsubishi Canter….“The rim contour complies with the 2009 Tyre & Rim Association Standard of Australia section F-16. The wheels produced have a maximum load carrying capacity of 1500 kg each.” This was not enough anyway as the Mitsubishi Canter has a maximum rear axle capacity of 4300 kg. To Federal Transport Authorities this was unacceptable without the actual test results showing the rims had actually been tested and what test standard was used.

The fact is, to our knowledge, there are no properly tested Commercial Truck wheels presently manufactured in Australia. In fact, there is not even a machine in Australia for testing commercial truck wheels to the ISO standard that all new truck manufacturers adhere to.

DSC_0423All Terrain Warriors is a company which also builds off-road tour buses and as such, it is critical to have all the right test results on all items for a D.O.T.A.R.S. approval compliance to allow our vehicles to be registered. We found we could not legally fit any aftermarket "super single" wheels to our buses or any other vehicle we built because there were no legal wheels in Australia anyway. This forced us to design and now import our own super single truck wheels that have been fully tested to the International ISO 3894 standard — the commercial wheel rim fatigue test.

The next problem was that now with the legal wheels fitted to the Fuso FG 84 and the Isuzu NPS 300, these 6 ton GVM vehicles failed both the NB2 and the much harder ME category brake test. This was due to the    8% increase in the rolling diameter of the bigger tyres. The wheel and tyre combination tested were up to 285/70R/19.5on 19.5 x 8.25 rims………. a lot of NB2 category vehicles which have been converted to single wheels are still using 100R16 tyres which are approximately 10% larger and will decrease braking performance even further.

In order to help these trucks meet the ADR brake performance standards, we had to make careful modifications to the braking systems and we were also required by Transport Authorities to provide an accurate speedometer which meant the fitment of a custom recalibration unit.

After a lot of testing and investment we now have a Second Stage Manufacture Approval from D.O.T.A.R.S for the fitting of super single wheels for the Mitsubishi Canter FG 84 4x4 and the Isuzu NPS. The compliance is for both the NB2 category (tray backs, pantechs, etc), motorhomes and also our buses under the ME category approval number.

As State Transport Authorities are now being made aware of the brake test failures and the legalities of the single wheels currently supplied, they have certainly been clamping down on any non-conforming conversions or those that cannot provide the appropriate test results. If you want to do this right the first time, make it safe and avoid costly mistakes or embarrassing incidents with transport authorities, please contact us or one of our approved dealers for the correct procedure.

Benefits of ATW Single Wheel Conversions include:

  • Extremely heavy duty outer rims and wheel centres with load ratings increased from 1750kg to 6000kg each.
  • Valves on both sides for easier inflation.
  • No rocks, etc caught between the duals causing sidewall damage.
  • Brings front and rear wheels into the same track, greatly improving performance in mud / sand.
  • Increased rolling diameter results in higher gearing with improved fuel consumption and overall performance, lower engine speeds and reduced wear.
  • Extremely heavy duty 16ply tubeless tyres with load ratings increased from the standard 1450 kg to 2900 kg per tyre (143/145L) and high puncture resistance.
  • True Mud 'n' Snow tread pattern which offer improved traction in all conditions with greater ability to traverse uneven ground, rocks, obstacles and corrugations.
  • Greatly increased tyre life.
  • Increased braking vacuum capacity and other brake modifications.
  • More accurate recalibrated speedometer.

Mitsubishi FG (5 and 6 stud models) and Isuzu NPS 250/300 Single Wheel Kits include:

  • ATW Speedo Recalibration Unit fitted.
  • ATW Secondary Brake Vacuum tank fitted.
  • Brake Proportioning value alterations.
  • 5 x ATW rims for front, rear and spare – American D.O.T. Standards approved. Tested to International ISO standard.Rated at 6000kg each. Each fitted with Double inflation valves. Offset allows equal front and rear track.
  • 5 x Toyo M608Z 285/R70/19.5” Mud ‘n‘ Snow Tyres rated at 2900kg each.
