Our initial problem was that not one aftermarket truck wheel manufacturer in
Australia was prepared to supply us with legal wheels (tested and certified). The best any of the manufacturers could give us was a piece of paper stating that for the Mitsubishi Canter, “The rim contour complies with the 2009 Tyre & Rim Association Standard of Australia section F-16. The wheels produced have a maximum load carrying capacity of 1500 kg each.” This was not enough anyway as the Mitsubishi Canter has a maximum rear axle capacity of 4300 kg. To Federal Transport Authorities this was useless and unacceptable without the actual test results showing the rims were actually tested and to what test standard was used.
The fact is, to our knowledge, there are no legal aftermarket Commercial Truck wheels manufactured in
Australia. At present there is not even a machine in Australia for testing Commercial Truck wheels to the ISO standard which is the requirement for all new truck manufacturers to adhere to.
All Terrain Warriors is a company which also builds off- road tour buses and as such, we have to have all the right test results on all items for a D.O.T.A.R.S. approval compliance to get our vehicles registered. We found we could not legally fit any aftermarket "super single" wheels to our buses or any other vehicle we built because there were no legal wheels in Australia anyway. This forced us to design and now import our own super single truck wheels that have been fully tested to the International ISO 3894 standard— the commercial wheel rim fatigue test.
The next problem was that now with the legal wheels fitted to the Fuso FG 84 and the Isuzu NPS 300, the vehicles failed both the NB2 and the much harder ME category brake test. This was due to the increased rolling circumference of the bigger wheels which is approximately 8 % more. The wheels as tested were 285R70 19.5 x 8.25, a lot of converted NB2 category vehicles are still using 100R 16 tyres which have approximately a 10 % increase in rolling circumference which is worse again.
In order to help the truck meet these brake performance tests , we had to make modifications to the braking system and we were also required by Transport Authorities to provide an accurate speedometer which meant the fitment of a custom recalibration unit.
After a lot of testing and investment we now have a Second Stage Manufacture Approval from D.O.T.A.R.S for the fitting of super single wheels for the Mitsubishi Canter FG 84 4x4 and the Isuzu NPS. The compliance is for both the NB2 category (tray backs, pantechs etc etc) and also our buses under another ME category approval number.
As State Transport Authorities are now being made aware of the brake test failures and the legalities of the single wheels currently supplied, they have certainly been clamping down on any non conforming conversions or those that cannot provide the appropriate test results.
